How to Host a Traditional Food Drive
1. Choose Your Group or Location
Traditional food drives can be hosted by businesses, schools, churches, community organizations, neighborhoods, clubs, or families who want to help.
Choose a location where people can easily see the collection area and drop off donations.
2. Pick Your Food Drive Dates
Decide how long your traditional food drive will run. Some groups collect food for a few days, while others choose a week, a month, or a special event date.
Before you begin, contact DSCRC so we know about your food drive and can help answer any questions.
3. Share the Items Needed
Let participants know what types of food items are most helpful.
Helpful items may include canned vegetables, canned fruit, soup, tuna, chicken, pasta, rice, beans, cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese, and other shelf-stable pantry items.
4. Collect Safe, Shelf-Stable Food
Please collect unopened, unexpired food items that can help local families prepare meals at home.
Please do not collect opened packages, expired food, damaged containers, or items without labels.
5. Spread the Word
Let people know what you are collecting, where to bring donations, and when the traditional food drive ends.
You can promote your food drive through flyers, email, social media, newsletters, bulletin boards, workplace announcements, or community groups.
6. Deliver the Donations
Once your traditional food drive is complete, contact DSCRC to coordinate your donation drop-off.
For larger collections, please reach out before arriving so our team can be ready to receive, weigh, sort, and stock the donated food.
Traditional Food Drive Tips
A successful traditional food drive does not have to be complicated. A few simple steps can help your collection stay organized and make a bigger impact.
Set a clear goal. Share why you are supporting DSCRC. Let people know what items are most helpful. Use a clearly marked collection box or table, and remind your group where and when to bring donations.
Encourage friends, family, coworkers, churches, schools, or community groups to participate. You can also create a theme, such as breakfast foods, canned proteins, family meals, kid-friendly pantry items, or holiday pantry staples.
